[침엽수수종] 4. 레드파인 (Scotch Pine, Red Pine)

 우리가 흔히 아는 러시아산 파인이다. 실무에서는 주로 레드파인이라고 불리우나,러시아 현지에서는 레드우드(Redwood)로 불려지기도 한다. 일단 목재의 외형이 국내 소나무와 많이 비슷하여, 우리민족과 친숙하여 인기가 매우 좋다. 

 고급구조재나 마감재 또는 루바(월판넬)이나 집성목형태로 많이 수입되어 진다. 이와 대비되는 것이 러시아산 가문비나무(Spruce)가 있는데, 유럽쪽 러시아에서 수입되는 나무는 거의 이 두가지 수종 중 하나라고 보면 된다. 

 두 나무의 가장 큰 차이는 색상이다. 레드파인이 약간 더 붉으며 스프루스는 하얀색에 가깝다. 또한 시공을 한 후에 살펴보면 스프루스는 색상이 거의 그대로 유지되는 반면 레드우드는 시간이 지날 수록 붉어지는 특징이 있다. 또한 옹이면에서 차이가 있는데, 상대적으로 레드파인의 옹이는 큰데 반해 스프루스의 경우 옹이가 작고 검은 색을 띄는 특징이 있다.

APPEARANCE(외관)

심재는 노랑갈색에서 붉은 갈색이며, 변재는 크림빛이 나는 백색에서 연한 노랑색을 띄는 심재와 쉽게 구분된다. 변재의 두께는 약 50-100mm정도이다. 나뭇결은 통직하며, 나무결은 상대적으로 고운편이다.
옹이가 그룹화되어 나타나는 것이, 산재해 나타나는 발틱산 소나무와 구분된다. 목재는 수지가 많으며, 춘재에는 검고 진한 나이테가 분명히 형성된다.

The heartwood of Scots pine is yellow-brown to reddish brown, and can be easily distinguished from the creamy white to pale yellow sapwood. The sapwood is 50-100mm wide. The grain is commonly straight and the texture relatively fine. Usually the knots are grouped, as distinct from white Baltic pine, where the knots are much more randomly distributed. The wood is resinous and the growth rings are marked by the darker, denser summerwood.

COMMON APPLICATIONS (주요 용도)

건축용재, 바닥재, 내부마감재, 집성목. 방부처리후 전신주나 기초용으로 사용할 수 있다.

Scots pine is used for general construction, paneling, flooring and interior joinery. Treated with preservatives it can also be used for poles and pit props.

WORKABILITY(작업성)

작업성이 좋은 가벼운 목재임에도 불구하고 상대적으로 강도도 있다. 적절한 방부처리를 한 후 외부에 사용될 수 있다.

Scots pine is easy to work with and is a reasonably strong timber with a light weight. When treated with preservatives it is durable enough for outside use.
